Retrofit

Retrofitting

Why Retrofit?

To meet its legal obligations under the Climate Change Act 2008, the UK needs to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 80% of 1990 levels by 2050.

As the UK has some of the oldest, leakiest, worst-insulated buildings in Europe, this will only be achieved by raising the energy efficiency of our housing stock to an average EPC rating of C by 2035. Improving energy efficiency through Retrofitting our existing domestic properties is one of the most significant ways to reduce carbon emissions, reduce fuel poverty and make homes healthier and more comfortable to live in.

What is Retrofit?

Retrofit is the process of improving the energy efficiency of existing buildings to reduce their energy usage, low running costs and reduce carbon emissions. Government have introduced new regulations for Retrofit to ensure all home improvement projects are done to the same professional, high-quality standards with written procedures, methodologies, processes, accountability being defined in law rather than left to individual businesses and trades.

PAS2035 is the new standard which governs Retrofit work in the UK and TrustMark is the Government Endorsed Quality Scheme that covers the work that a consumer chooses to have carried out to their home. It aims to provide customer confidence through its network of scheme providers, registered businesses, and qualified professionals.

Retrofitted properties can be more comfortable, healthier and cheaper to run. However, to get the most from the improvements that are to be installed, it is essential to understand what improvements are most suitable and will have the greatest effect. It is also important to understand the most effective sequence for the improvements so that one improvement does not undermine those to follow.

How do we help?

A qualified and accredited Retrofit Assessor will conduct an assessment and consider the improvements that are most suitable for the property and because everyone’s home is unique, how the occupants actually use the building day-to-day.

It is important for the overall plan to be managed by a qualified and accredited Retrofit Coordinator who will define, schedule, check, test and take on the responsibility of making sure that works are being done precisely according to the overall retrofit plan and that the predicted results are being achieved.
